1 is more interesting than the later, more technically adept releases, which are mostly shambling troglodyte versions of the same templates that are still popular today. And the early, weird experimental stuff like Jumping Flash! and Tobal No. The games that have held up best are the ones that were derided for being old fashioned and out of touch at release, like Symphony of the Night, Klonoa, and Lunar: SSS. The NES's library is more playable today than the PS1's. It's not enough for them to be really bad, they have to betray my memories of them too. Most of the games that seemed so exciting and fresh and mature in that era are worse than jokes. I mean they're unbearable experiences due to various combinations of low frame rate, long load times, heinous camera work, slipshod controls, and criminal ugliness.įrankly, it's depressing. In the decade or so since I last played PS1 games with any regularity, the majority of my collection has become unplayable.

Unfortunately, I've mostly been thwarted. I've spent a few hours today digging though my old PS1 collection, trying to find something good to play to scratch that nostalgia itch.
